Arts and Crafts

An international design philosophy that originated in England and flourished during the latter half of the 19th century. It advocated traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and often medieval, romantic or folk styles of decoration. It also advocated economic and social reform and can be seen as essentially anti-industrial.

It was largely a reaction against the impoverished state of the manufactured goods and the labour conditions by which they were produced. Medieval Guilds provided a new model for the production method. Aesthetics are typically rectilinear and angular, influenced by Medieval, Islamic and Japanese forms.

The Arts and Crafts movement had its earliest and most complete development in the British Islands but spread to Europe and the United States where it was also known as Mission style. Instigated by the artist and writer William Morris (1834-1896) during the 1860s and inspired by the social reform concerns of thinkers such as Walter Crane and John Ruskin (1819-1900) and designer August Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852). Charles Voysey was an important innovator in this style and Owen Jones published the book 'The Grammar of Ornament', which was a sourcebook of historic decorative design elements, largely taken from medieval and Islamic sources that inspired designers as Christopher Dresser.

Henry Cole (1808-1882), Richard Redgrave (1804-1888), and Owen Jones (1809-1874) developed with the support of Prince Albert (1819-1861) three formal guidelines: decoration is secondary to form; form is dictated by function and the materials; and design should derive from historical English and non-Western ornament as well as plant and animal sources, distilled into simple, linear motifs.

Morris' intentions were to create affordable, handcrafted goods that reflected the workers' creativity and individuality. However, the mass market outpriced the English Arts and Crafts movement, and the exquisitely made and decorated pieces could only be afforded by the very wealthy and only few craftsman could be employed making these fine pieces. From the English Arts and Crafts style now evolved the Aesthetic Style that shared some characteristics with the French/Belgian Art Nouveau movement. In the United States, the Arts and Crafts ideal of design for the masses was more fully realized, though at the expense of the fine individualized craftsmanship typical of the English style.

Another influence on design reform was the mounting information about health and hygiene in the nineteenth century. Charles Locke Eastlake's 'Hints on Household Taste' (1868) that was widely read throughout England and the United States, called for morality and honesty in craftsmanship and a simpler style of furniture based on Renaissance and Gothic Revivals but with incised decoration that allowed for easier cleaning.

no one could mistake it for a contemporary of the neighboring nineteenth-century homes -- and resonant with reminders of building traditions. a studious observer may find traces of victorian country homes, the english arts and crafts movement, greene and greene, the viennese secessionists and frank lloyd wright. a casual wanderer through the bucolic grounds of the academy may simply enjoy a sense of familiarity with the place, appreciating the accommodation between building and site." —alex krieger, ed.
