Auguste Rodin

Auguste François Rene Rodin, French sculptor, painter, draughtsman and graphic artist. (born Paris 1840, died Meudon 1917).

Auguste Rodin was not only a great lover of women, he was also a great sculptor. His Impressionist work brought about a shock of modernization for the people of his time. He treated the classic subject of sculpture in a way that was unusual and unheard of for many. He showed a remarkable use of materials and an unprecedented Realism. He was even suspected of making casts of living people. His works impress especially through the lively modelling and the dramatic expressiveness of the human body.

Rodin was an Impressionist sculptor. Like the painters he used nature to liven up his work. He also tried to reproduce the temporality of the impression. His work stands out for the use of the irregular surface, on which the light causes brilliance which gives the sculpture a new kind of agility.

As the painters constructed their work from color- and lightspots, Rodin constructed his sculptures from clay and bronze. By visualizing the making proces Rodin was able to unleash the temporal aspect in his work.

Another characteristic of Impressionism in sculpture is the view that art is autonomous, form and intention are a unity and the viewer is able to see how the work was made. Therefore it sometimes seems unfinished.

Rodins painting and graphic art stands wrongly in the shadow of his unsurpassed sculpture. In his erotic drawings he uses only a few stripes and little color to indicate the essence.

Rodin had a tumultuous affair with his pupil Camille Claudel (1864-1943), who was 24 years younger than him.
