Byzantine Empire, the Eastern
Roman Empire, from about the 4th century until the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, The Eastern Orthodox states which were contemporary with the Byzantine Empire and were culturally influenced by it such as Bulgaria, Serbia, or Rus And the art of the Republic of
Venice and Kingdom of Sicily, which had close ties to the Byzantine Empire as well as the western European culture.
In 323 Emperor Constantine moved the capitol of the Roman Empire to Byzantium that was then renamed Constantinople. The Western Empire fell in 400's with an invasion from the northern Germanic Tribes. The Eastern Byzantium section survived a thousand years longer, till the fall of Constantinople (now known as Istanbul) in 1453 to the Turks.
Byzantine paintings and mosaics are characterized by a rich use of color and flat and stiff figures that appear to be floating with long and narrow faces and large starring eyes. Backgrounds tend to be solidly golden or toned. Intended as religious lessons, they were presented clearly and simply in order to be easily learned. Byzantine architects favored the central plan covered by a huge dome.
The Western Empire fell in 400, the Byzantium Empire stayed in tact over a thousand years longer, till the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the Turks.
