Good Shepherd, the CatacombsEarly Christian art
Art made by Christians from circa 100 AD to about 500 AD, also called Paleo-Christian or primitive Christian art.
Early Christians used the same artistic media as the surrounding pagan culture in
Roman forms- and styles. They adapted Roman motifs and symbols like the peacock, grapevines, and the "good shepherd" and gave new meanings to them ands developed their own iconography such as the fish (ikhthus). The Christian artists rejected the ideals of perfection in form and technique and created images which would draw the spectator into the inner eye of their work, pointing to its spiritual significance. They used art as a way to transmit their faith and beliefs as well as to teach.
After 200 A.D. Christian art is divided into two periods: before and after the First Council of Nicea in 325, before being the Ante-Nicene Period and after being the period of the First seven Ecumenical Councils.
Flowering of Christian art was possible only after 313, when the Christian emperor Constantine the Great decreed official toleration of Christianity. This brought the religion popularity, riches, and many converts from all classes of society and the church now needed to produce art and architecture on a more ambitious scale in order to accommodate and educate its new members. To reflect its new dignity and social importance, churches and shrines were being built throughout the empire, many sponsored by Constantine himself.
Early Christian art in the eastern part of the Roman Empire is usually considered to be part of Byzantine art.
