Self portrait in a Soft Hat (1857-1858)Edgar Degas
French painter, draughtsman, printmaker, pastellist and sculptor. (born Paris, 1834 - died Paris, 1917)
Edgar Degas is considered an important representative of the
Impressionist movement.
Degas was the son of a rich banker and because of his aristocratic background, in the beginning he didn't mix with his contempories. In his youth he was a great admirer of Ingres, which made him develop into a classic craftsman, looking for balance and bright contours in his work, what he didn't give up entirely not even as an
Impressionist and what distinguished him from the other
Impressionists.
Degas studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Louis Lamothe, a pupil of Ingres. From 1856 he lived and travelled in
Italy where he studied Italian
Renaissance art and copied Italian masters like Ghirlandaio and Mantegna. In the beginning of his career he mainly painted portraits and historical pieces and he develops into a
realist who overthrows academic composition.
In 1865 he becomes friends with
Édouard Manet,
Paul Cézanne, Henri Fantin-Latour,
Pierre-Auguste Renoir,
Claude Monet,
Alfred Sisley,
Frédéric Bazille and
Camille Pissarro from the group that would later become the movement of Impressionists and till 1870 he exhibits at the Salon.
His subject matters started to change and he chose to paint scenes from daily life, washerwomen, ironers, the racetracks, café's and from 1867 the first of his famous ballet dancers and theaterpieces.
Although Degas participated in eight exhibitions from the Impressionists, he didn't pick up the cheerfulness of their landscapes nor their painting style. Also, his art is not spontaneous, but according to Degas himself, is based on reflection and study of the old masters. In his work man and city life is always the center.
Loosing his eyesight more and more, at the end his life he could only dedicate himself to sculpting.
