Thither in that place came to me a troop of many people from Great Armenia, that were going on pilgrimage to Jerusalem … By an interpreter … they begged me that I would show them the saintly King. I went to the King where he sat in a pavilion, leaning against the pole of the pavilion … I said to him: 'Sir, there is without a band of many folk from Great Armenia, that are going to Jerusalem, and they pray me, Sir, that I have them shown the saintly King; but I have no wish yet to kiss your bones.' Panel - Crucifixion - Victoria & Albert Museum - Search the Collections the plaque may therefore have been set within a larger structure, as were several of the other surviving examples. the presence of st francis, and the other bishop saint (probably st louis of toulouse) is likely to indicate a franciscan link. the majority of the surviving objects in this medium with any known provenance belong to franciscan houses - several survive at assisi for example. but most verre eglomise reliquaries were intended for private ownership.
