Self Portrait (1890)(detail)Henri Rousseau
French painter. (born Laval, 1844 - died Paris, 1910)
Henri Rousseau was an entirely self-taught Naïve painter. As one of the most important representatives of
Naïve art,
Rousseau was often mocked. He wanted to paint like Bouguereau and having had no formal training he was convinced that he painted in a purely academic style. He often interpreted the sarcastic remarks on his work as praise.
In 1869 Rousseau started working as a toll collector at the Customs Office in Paris, which is why he is sometimes called Le Douanier Rousseau, although he never was one. In 1893 he accepted early retirement to dedicate himself entirely to painting. Amongst his fantastic paintings his junglescenes are the best known, painted with an enormous precision and detail. He claimed to be inspired by the Mexican jungle, but he never left France. He was a regular visitor of the botanic gardens and the zoo.
In 1884 Rousseau got permission to sketch in national museums. In 1885 he exhibited at the Salon des Champs-Elysées and from 1886 till his death in 1910 he regularly exhibited in the Salon des Indépendants and from 1905 in the Salon d'Automne.
In 1890 Rousseau met
Toulouse-Lautrec,
Gauguin,
Redon,
Seurat and Pisarro. He made his first exotic paintings. In 1893 he retired and met artist and writer Alfred Jarry, who introduced him to the literary circles. In 1899 Rousseau wrote a five-act play titled
La Vengeance dune orpheline russe. In 1904 he published the waltz
Clémence, composed by him.
In 1906 Rousseau became friends with
Robert Delaunay and in 1907 with Wilhelm Uhde, who published the first monograph about him in 1911.
In 1908
Picasso organised a banquet in Rousseau's honor, that was attended by Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob and Marie Laurencin amongst others.
Picasso introduced Rousseau in the art world, but the Surrealists acknowledged Rousseau's talent, and realised that the untrained eye could see further than the academic eye.
