suggests that our panels were the diptych with the crucifixion and last judgment mentioned in the 1416 inventory of the duc de berry's possesions as no. 1266, "uns grans tableaux en deux pieces ..." [jules guiffrey, "inventaires de jean duc de berry, paris, 1894–96, vol. 2, p. 285]. it does not seem likely that these panels would ever have been described as large, but it is interesting to note that the subjects were sometimes paired.

this book of hours was made for bonne de luxembourg. she was a bohemian princess, the sister of holy roman emperor charles iv, wife of jean, duke of normandy and later king of france, known as jean le bon (john the good). charles v of france and jean duc de berry were among her children. her arms, luxembourg impaled with valois, appear throughout the manuscript in the lower borders. the style, influenced by jean pucelle, indicates a date toward the middle of the century, prior to bonne's death in 1349.
