Self-Portrait with the Yellow Christ, 1889, Musée d'OrsayPaul Gauguin
French painter, sculptor, ceramist and printmaker. (born, Paris, 1848 - died, Atuona HivaOa (Marquesas Islands), 1903)
Paul Gauguin is considered one of the leading artists of
Post Impressionism in the years 1880-1890, who had a lot of influence on twentieth century art by developing form and color to expressive means in his art. He is sometimes called the father of
Expressionism, wanting to express feelings through color and no longer wanting to depict reality.
In the beginning he was under the influence of
Impressionism, especially Camille Pisarro's style.
However, soon he developed
Synthetism. He was convinced that there was a close relation between painting and music, and because of that one could express with analogue patterns in color, just like in music. These ideas were later again adopted by
Vassily Kandinsky and Hoelzel.
Gauguin explored the symbolic values of lines, colors and flat areas of color and so pioneered the later art movements of Expressionism and
abstract art.
Gauguin also created new possibilities for the woodcut technique and the wooden sculpures, that were used again by the painters of the Brücke in the 20th century.
In 1888 Gauguin travelled to Arles where he spent nine weeks with
Vincent Van Gogh, working together in Van Goghs house. Their difference of opinion stood in the way of a fruitful collaboration. During this period, Gauguin became increasingly disillusioned with Impressionism.
