Pilgrims

In the Middle Ages Middle Ages The term 'Middle Ages' refers to the epoch stretching from Antiquity to the Renaissance. It roughly covers the thousand years from 500 to 1500. The fall of the Roman Empire (476) is regarded as the beginning of the Middle Ages, the discovery of America (1492) as its end. Throughout these centuries various stylistic periods can be distinguished - the early Christian period, the Romanesque period and the Gothic. it was common for people to make a pilgrimage, a journey to a place where Christ had lived and died, or where important relics of saints were kept. Sinners hoped to be absolved of their sins and the sick sought to be healed. The principal places of pilgrimage were Jerusalem in Palestine, the 'promised land', Rome and Santiago de Compostela. The tomb of Christ is in Jerusalem, the tombs of the apostles Peter and Paul in Rome and that of James the Greater in Santiago de Compostela. Wearing special clothes and pilgrims' attributes Pilgrim's badge When on a pilgrimage to a city like Rome or Santiago de Compostela, a person would wear a pilgrim's hat, a long cloak and a carried a pilgrim's staff.
